Herbert Tichy

In the autumn of 1954, Viennese adventurer and author Herbert Tichy became the first person to stand on the summit of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world. Rather than attempting to “conquer” an 8,000-metre peak as part of a large-scale expedition, as was customary at the time, Tichy and his companions Sepp Jöchler, Helmut Heuberger and Pasang Dawa Lama approached the mountain with respect and humility — and in doing so, revolutionized the history of high-altitude mountaineering.
