Weinviertel Border Stories

Some of the most beautiful corners of the Weinviertel lie along its borders. And these borders are wet: Along the March, Thaya, and Danube rivers, you’ll find untouched natural paradises, inviting cellar lanes, and fertile vineyards.
The lingering presence of the former Iron Curtain can still be felt: In many places, the only way to cross into the Czech Republic or Slovakia is via a pedestrian bridge or a simple ferry. This creates a sense of seclusion—peaceful yet remote.
At the same time, exchange with Czech and Slovak neighbors has flourished: Austrian fans cheer for Czech ice hockey pros in Znojmo. Conservationists on both sides work together to preserve the rich biodiversity of the Thaya Valley. And organic farmers in the Laa region rely on their Czech harvest workers.
