Heimatleuchten “On the Danube”

The Danube symbolizes Austria – and at the same time, it connects the country with Europe and the world. In a journey along the river, the film portrays people who live, work, and have found their home on and by the water.
If Austria were a human body, the Danube would be its carotid artery. A vital transport route, a link between natural habitats, a landmark. The Danube is international, connecting Austria with its neighboring countries in economic, cultural, and historical aspects. No other river in the world flows through as many countries as the Danube.
With the Wachau region and the Danube wetlands, the river has created unique and magical landscapes. Natural paradises – and places where charismatic and fascinating people have found their home, where unconventional ways of life can be encountered, and where one can meet distinctive personalities. Here, contrasts lie close together: rural idylls and international connections. Cargo ships and traditional Daubel fishing huts. Bathing cabins and locks. Industrial flagships and vineyards.
