Everything Except Vienna – On the Road in Lower Austria

Whenever Peter Kühmayer feels like teasing his daughter Katja, he hides the license plate on her VW bus. The former hut keeper from Peilstein can’t even remember the last time he set foot in the big city. The noise, the rush, the cramped space, and above all... the Viennese! That’s probably why Katja is the only hut keeper in Austria who was actually born in her hut.
Near Pressbaum, Hans Brabec-Wolf gave up his secure job at the Vienna Fire Department to run a farm in one of the most beautiful spots in the Vienna Woods—complete with horse-powered work.
In Baden, a young equestrian proudly upholds the imperial city's tradition of harness racing. Meanwhile, on Bisamberg, a beekeeper and a ceramic artist work hand in hand to create something truly unique in the worlds of honey and pottery.
In Groß-Enzersdorf, a young farmer spends every summer weekend attracting lovebirds to his drive-in cinema, right on the city’s edge. And in Kritzendorf near Klosterneuburg, hundreds of people shed their Viennese identities every summer to become full-time Strombad residents—mosquitoes and flooding be damned.
Josef Metzger, too, finds his sacred peace atop what might be Austria’s most legendary car scrapyard, even though his daughters race around the wrecked cars like it’s their personal rally track.
All these people agree: none of this would be possible in Vienna. So much space, so much independence, so much freedom! Lately, Katja has been spending entire weeks up on her mountain, venturing into the city less and less. Maybe her father won’t have to hide her Vienna license plate for much longer.
